10th Anniversary Legends Game - Saturday 1 October

EventsPosted by admin Tue, September 20, 2016 19:03:27

Leicester Blue Sox begin their official 10th Anniversary celebrations on Saturday 1 October with a specially-arranged 'Legends Game' that will feature past and present stars of Leicester's longest running baseball team.

Baseball has a rich, yet stop-start history in the county, with the previously longest consecutive stints including the Leicester Green Sox who folded on their 10th birthday in 1964 and the Sileby Vikings who ran from 1996-2004.

Between all of this, the Green Sox re-booted in the late 80's for a couple of years before being succeeded by the Ashby Royals for a few seasons more.

In 2006, the Soar Valley Blue Sox were created by ex-Viking Mark Meredith with support from Shaun Hill, who played for the 1980's Green Sox (plus the Braunstone Dodgers junior team prior to this).

From the very beginning, Mark's vision was to create a stable and sustainable club that would develop over the longer term, with youth baseball very much at the heart of that vision. No longer would we settle for stop-start teams that were pushed from pillar to post, Mark demanded a permanent location including ambitious plans for a backstop drawn up by Shaun.

By the time of our fifth anniversary in 2011, those plans started to gather momentum with funding finally in place for our permanent backstop at Western Park, as well as the launch of junior baseball in 2012.

Fast-forward to 2016 and Leicester Blue Sox is thriving, with a competitive first-team holding two national titles under it's belt (from 2009 and 2012) and a quarter-final placing in the end of season playoffs this season just gone. Our junior section now has four age groups and we continue to grow and develop women/girls softball in the city. Our membership exceeded 100 players for the first time in our history this season and we now look forward to celebrating with many of them when the club holds its' 10th Anniversary day and night events on Saturday 1 October.

Prior to our evening celebration being held at the Goals Soccer Centre Sport Bar, our Legends Game will be played at our Western Park diamond at midday.

Players already confirmed for the event include:

Leicester Blue Sox current squad

Dave Burke
Rory Chandler
Max Bennett
Alan Edgington
Ron Mason
Chris Mee
Scott McMillan
Justas Raupenas
Tomas Juskenas
Sigi Juskenas
Gied Janulevicius
Rik Martina
Cory Shackleton
Joel Upton

Legends squad

Mark Meredith
Tim Davidson
Denny Walker
Shaun Hill
Matt Catton
Tarro Morris
Shannon Henry
Kevin Hurst
James Corrie
Luke Martin

With less than two weeks to go, our Legends game will be the perfect opportunity to sign-off our 10th Anniversary season!

Leicester Blue Sox at Western Park Festival 2016

EventsPosted by admin Tue, June 28, 2016 19:38:00

After a one-year break, Leicester Blue Sox are returning to the Western Park Festival on Saturday 9 July, as part of their 10th anniversary celebrations.

This large scale family fun-day returns for its fifth year and will showcase some of the city's amazing, local emerging bands and acoustic acts across three stages.

Last year saw approximately 8,000 people throughout the day, all enjoying the music, food and family children's activities, in glorious sunshine.

Leicester Blue Sox's 'batting cage' will be situated at the Festival "Kidzone". The cage will boast a pitching machine, which is sure to be popular with youngsters and those young at heart. £1 will get you a bucket of balls to hit from, plus our first 100 paying visitors will also be given a limited edition Leicester Blue Sox car sticker – once they have gone, they have gone!

All funds raised will be donated to our selected cause for 2016, the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Our friendly team of volunteers will be recognizable in our striking light blue 10th anniversary t-shirts. So come along, meet the team, have some fun with Leicester Blue Sox at the Western Park Festival – a great day out for all the family!

Baseball & fastpitch fundraising day - Saturday 28 May

EventsPosted by admin Mon, May 02, 2016 16:03:53

Leicester Blue Sox is delighted to announce another special event for it’s 10th Anniversary season. On Saturday 28 May we will be hosting an exciting menu of both baseball and fastpitch softball games on separate diamonds at Western Park.

In addition, the event will also be a fundraiser, raising money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. MND awareness rose a few years back, thanks to the viral ‘ice bucket challenge’.

In the United States the condition is commonly referred to as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). It is also known also known as ‘Lou Gehrig’s Disease’ named after the Hall of Fame first baseman of the New York Yankees who sadly passed away in 1941 after contracting the illness.

The finer detail of this upcoming event will be confirmed nearer the date. At present this is what we are envisaging on the day.

· Baseball games featuring our Blue Sox u19 team and our ‘2sox’ adult second team

· We are working on adding a third visiting team to the menu, to hopefully make this a three team round-robin

· Fastpitch games featuring players pooled from our women/girls and u15 baseball sections

· We are also extending the invite to fastpitch players across our region, so that we have enough pitching depth to put on two or more games during the day

· Event shelter featuring PA/music and hot dog stand

· Batting cage and pitching machines for players to use

· Home-run derby

· Fundraising initiatives on the day, ie raffle etc.

With no regular season game scheduled for the Sunday 29th May, we want to make the most of the next bank holiday weekend and put on an event that large numbers of members and visitors will enjoy, together with fundraising for a good cause.

Want to get involved? Please respond to our advance Teamer notification going out soon!
