"The Big Dig" is back!!

This Saturday 10 March will see the first Blue Sox action of the season at Western Park when club will be swapping bats, balls and helmets for spades, rakes and wheelbarrows!

Our annual field renovations event provides the opportunity for all sections of the club to come together for the good of the game and put the sparkle back into our diamond ahead of pre-season.

Adult players, older juniors, and parents are all encouraged to get their hands dirty, with big pile of brick dust and bags of loam on deck, to help us refurbish to cut out areas and mounds

The action starts at 10am and is expected to run until around 2pm (or just after). If both the weather and turnout is good, the Blue Sox nation is sure to make light work of it!

RSVP for field renovations care of this Facebook event invite, stating what tools you can bring (wheelbarrows are especially needed!)

Providing we can get this work done, then adult training resumes the next day Sunday 11 March 10am-1pm at Western Park.

Also our Youth Baseball Camp starts the following weekend on Sunday 18 March 1.30pm-3.30pm.

Both adult training and Youth Baseball Camp are depending on these groundworks being completed, so please can you 'pitch in' this Saturday!

Let's go Blue Sox!

Leicester Blue Sox adult team broken bat policyNews

All players both new and returning are ask to familiarise themselves with the club’s broken bat policy as per below.

1. Club metal bats are provided at training, if you do not own your own bat, we recommend that you use these bats to minimise breakages and replacement costs

2. Club wooden bats are provided for regulation games, if you do not own your own bat, you are able to use these bats, however, if you are responsible for breaking a club wooden bat in any situation (game, training, warm-up etc.), then you are immediately liable for replacing the bat at the current full replacement cost

3. We do not recommend that you borrow a team mates bat, however, if you end up being responsible for breaking a team mates wooden bat in any situation (game, training, warm-up), then you are immediately liable for replacing the bat at the current full replacement cost

Most wood bat breakage issues can be resolved by properly orienting the logo (or trademark) so as to place the edge grain parallel to the flight of the baseball at the point of contact. This is the position that yields the lowest breakage and the highest hitting power.

To cut down on breakage, hold the bat in front of you with the logo up (or facing you). Then rotate the logo towards your lead shoulder (shoulder closest to the pitcher). The more you hit off your back foot, the more you should rotate the bat toward the lead shoulder.

The maximum angle should be 45 degrees. You may want to place a mark on the bat once you get the ideal alignment. This should put your bat in the proper hitting position with the edge grain aligned perfectly to hit the ball. This proper alignment not only will decrease breakage dramatically, but will also increase hitting power due to the restriction of the flexion of the bat.

Welcome to another exciting season of baseball at Western Park!

The below player briefing should help you prepare for our upcoming pre-season events and hopefully answer any questions you have about membership and training.

Indoor pre-season training

The club has decided to open up it's upcoming Boot Camp sessions to all Blue Sox players both existing and those new to the club in 2018.

Our main focus in these indoor sessions will be pitching and catching as well as batting practice, including the use of a full speed pitching machine.

The dates of the sessions are as follows (all 2.30pm-4.30pm):

Sunday 4 February 2018

Sunday 11 February 2018

Sunday 18 February 2018

There will be a small fee of £5 per player at each session to help cover the cost of hall hire.

Anyone who has paid deposits in anticipation of this year’s Boot Camp will get free entry to these sessions and the balance will be credited towards their 2018 membership fee.

Venue

Brockington College Indoor Sports Hall

Blaby Road

Enderby

Leicester

LE19 4AQ

Outdoor pre-season training

Following the completion of our indoor sessions, we then expect to move onto the 3G surface at Brockington College on Sunday 25 February and Sunday 4 March (times to be confirmed).

We then have our annual field renovations date scheduled at Western Park on Saturday 10 March.

Providing the weather is fine and we complete our expected field work, outdoor training will then move to Western Park from Sunday 11 March for the rest of the pre-season.

Baseball team and league

The club will only be registering one adult baseball team into the British Baseball Federation league in 2018.

Last year we ran a second team East Midlands Wolfpack which was joint venture with our friends at the Long Eaton Storm baseball club. However, both clubs have lost a number of players from their first team during the off-season and we will need to promote players from the Wolfpack to their respective club’s first team in 2018.

Overall the Wolfpack project has been a great success, as it has got many adult beginners game time last season and provided them with a pathway towards first team baseball.

We may resurrect the Wolfpack in future seasons, where we identify a surplus of new players across the regions.

Membership

You can pay your membership all in one go (discounted annual membership) or pay in instalments.

The amount of annual membership is £120 and needs to be paid by 13 April 2018. If this payment has not been made in full by that date, your membership will be assumed to be 'pay as you go'.

The 'pay as you go' deposit is £30 which needs to be paid by 30 April 2018. Thereafter your remaining payments are £25 by 31 May 2018, £25 by 29 June 2018, £25 by 31 July 2018 and your final £25 by 31 August 2018.

We would prefer that you pay your membership by online banking in the club account.

Registration

All adult players who wish to be considered for our team need to register online via this form:

https://leicesterbluesox.wufoo.co.uk/forms/leicester-blue-sox-2018-adult-member-registration/

Blue Sox committee updateNews

Leicester Blue Sox held their annual general meeting Sunday 12 November and this was followed by the new committee's first meeting on Sunday 3 December.

The main areas to update our membership about following these meetings, are as follows.

Operations committee

Our operations committee was re-elected at the AGM.

Matt Crawshaw (Chair)
Helen Rollins (Treasurer)
Kelle-Marie Simmonds (Secretary)
Nadine Attwell (Safeguarding Officer)
Dave Burke (Volunteer Co-ordinator)

Performance committee changes

Our performance committee normally gets finalised before pre-season, but there have already been some changes made.

Firstly, we welcome Ron Mason as our new adult first team manager. Congratulations to Ron on this appointment, we are sure you will make the role a great success.

We also welcome Blue Sox veteran Brett Melville back to the club's committee. He is looking to assist with adult coaching on our usual Wednesday evening slot next season.

Last season's skipper Alan Edgington will continue as an adult team player, but will also support the Little Sox u8 coaching.

Steve Rollins will lead the coaching for the Blue Sox Juniors u15 programme. There will no longer be training on Thursday evenings for this age group and from next season, all training will be on Sunday afternoons 1.30pm-3.30pm. All regular season games for the u15's will be on occasional Saturday's as we will be enrolling the team into the BBF Youth Super League.

Matt Crawshaw will continue to coach both the Little Sox u8 and u11 programmes. The tee-ball programme will continue on Sundays at the usual 12.30pm slot.

The scale of our u11 programme will expanding. Core training will continue on Sunday's at 1.30pm, but there will also been an extra hour of advanced training which will follow at 2.30pm. The u11's will also be joining the BBF Youth Super League, with regular season games on occasional Saturday's. Those u11 players who are selected for this travel team, will be expected to regularly attend both the core and advanced training sessions on Sunday's.

Finances

At our committee meeting, Matt ran through the club's financial position which remains pretty stable despite a drop in income due to lack of sponsors and the collapse of our softball programme.

Membership fees for the 2018 season will be as follows:

Adult baseball £130 (£10 discount if paid in full by end of March)
Juniors u15 £60
Little Sox u11 £40 (increased due to rising costs of programme)
Little Sox u8 £20

Code of Conduct

The club will be publishing an updated code of conduct early in the new year.

In addition to this, there will be supplementary charters for youth coaches, youth players and parents.

Due to changes in BaseballSoftballUK safeguarding requirements, there will be a need for parent permission forms/registration to be completed in hard copy every season. We can no longer roll forward from a previous season. The new forms will incorporate the new codes of conduct and charters.

Adult registration can continue online and is expected to open by 15 January 2018.

Broken Bat Policy

Stay tuned for a club announcement in relation to the use of wooden bats in the adult programme. There have been far too many instances of broken bats in recent seasons and we will be introducing a broken bat policy that gives clear guidance on liability if you happen to break a club or teammates' wooden bat.

The full announcement should follow this month.
